I posted the beginning of an improv where a boring block was chopped up and added to until it became interesting (see post here), but it was not done. So I added some 8" scrappy and wonky log cabin blocks and a few other things and wound up with this. It is 37.75" x 47.5" and the quilting is simple: mostly straight lines with a few odd lines thrown in to keep me from getting bored. This one is hanging in my sewing area and I really like it. Besides, it made a great dent in my scraps ... read more

I'm still working on the odds/ends from the guild, but now have all tops done, and was able to get one sandwiched and partly quilted. Since there are fifteen of them, it might be a while to do 'my' stuff, but I did take a break and made a few random blocks from scraps. One of them looked like this:
Boring. A library book on making modern improv quilts got into my head so I decided to slash up this boring block (about 16" square) and add some scraps leftover from various things but in colors that worked ... read more
Posting once a month is better than never? Not really. I've been cleaning up green and blue scraps and it seems to take forever. Last week I pulled a Jean Wells book on color from my art books. How it got there is a mystery, but it was a huge encouragement as I was sewing very similar blocks that she illustrated in her book.
Besides that, TQS featured a guest who makes simple blocks for her "pantry" and uses them when a need comes. Alex Anderson said she'd never seen that before, but I was into my third ...

Improv is fun, but not necessarily does it make sense. However, that box of blue scraps (turn head sideways to see most of the box at the top of the third photo) is nearly empty -- only because the scraps are either on my longarm, or on a portable table STILL. I have plans to put a row on the top and one on the bottom ...
read moreHeard about this from somewhere, ordered one and fun... It is called a Boogie Board, something like the old Etch a Sketch but bigger. Great for doodling ideas for quilting, and other fun things. Push the button and it's gone. Or take a photo to save it for future reference. About $20 on Amazon and there are many brands. Just don't pay any attention to the "get a second one free" coupon that may come with it. It is a scheme to collect/sell email addresses...
Also, my apologies for laying trees on their side. Here is the ... read moreThe one below is a scrappy quilt made from the leftover pieces for a larger scrappy. It is about 36 x 60 and perfect for practicing. I've never tried feathers before. I'm a coward. However, decided to attack and do some large, free-motion feathers around the outside. There are five blocks in a row and I'm doing them in simple lines ... read more
And it’s time for a bit of fun. I’m driving through upstate New York visiting several of my quilt shops before heading off to Quilt Market. I’m enjoying the glorious riot of color. Yesterday I drove to Crazy Moose in Inlet NY right in the middle of Adirondack Park. The sunrise indescribable. The fun? While… Continue reading Autumn is falling
